1930s Sears Catalog Home Restoration

Welcome

A Daytona Beach area home that inspired substantially more than a simple makeover — a full exterior and interior restoration honoring nearly a century of Florida history.

The Story

A Piece of American History, Right Here in Volusia County

Between 1908 and 1940, Sears, Roebuck and Co. sold more than 70,000 homes through their Modern Homes mail-order catalog. Buyers would select a design, place an order, and receive a kit containing pre-cut lumber, hardware, and instructions — everything needed to build a complete house. These homes were built to last, and many still stand today as quiet landmarks of early 20th-century American life.

This particular home, located in the Daytona Beach area, is one of those survivors. Built in the early 1930s from a Sears catalog kit, it had weathered nearly a century of Florida sun, humidity, and salt air. When the homeowners came to Lewis & Lewis Painting, they weren't just looking for a fresh coat of paint — they wanted the home's character preserved and its original craftsmanship honored.

That's exactly the kind of project we live for.

Project Details

  • Location: Daytona Beach Area, Volusia County
  • Home Era: Early 1930s — Sears Modern Homes Catalog
  • Scope: Full exterior restoration
  • Duration: Multi-week restoration project
  • Products Used: Sherwin-Williams Superpaint Satin Exterior

Phase 1

01 The Home Before We Started

Nearly a century of Florida weather had taken its toll. The original wood lap siding had cracked and peeling paint, the cedar shingles on the upper story were cracked, heavily layered old and peeling, and the rear structure needed significant attention.

Phase 2

02 Preparation — The Most Important Step

On a 90-year-old home, preparation is everything. Our crew hand-scraped & sanded every surface — cedar shingles, wood lap siding, trim, and the concrete block foundation - removing all failing paint before a single drop of new product was applied.

Preparation Checklist

Thorough Assessment

Period-Appropriate Color Selection

Period-Appropriate Color Selection

We began with a detailed walkthrough to document the condition of every surface — wood siding, trim, soffits, and fascia. Ninety-year-old homes have stories written into their surfaces, and we read every one before picking up a brush.

We worked with the homeowners to choose a color palette that honored the home's 1930s character while giving it fresh curb appeal. Historic paint research and period color guides informed every choice.

Surface Preparation

Period-Appropriate Color Selection

Surface Preparation

Proper prep is everything on a historic home. We carefully scraped, sanded, and pressure-washed all exterior surfaces, addressing any rot, caulking gaps, and priming bare wood before any topcoat was applied. No shortcuts.

Surface Preparation

Before the finish coats of paint could be applied, we carefully applied Sherwin-Williams Exterior Wood Oil Primer to the bare wood for maximum adhesion to the wood. Of course, the wood had to be completely dry for the oil to penetrate properly. This was carefully planned out with the weather in mind, because a home like this deserves the careful planning and attention.

Florida's climate is brutal on paint. We used Sherwin-Williams Superpaint Satin Exterior — a product engineered for high humidity, UV exposure, and temperature swings — to ensure the restoration lasts for years to come.

Before calling the job complete, we walked every exterior elevation with the homeowners, addressing any touch-ups and ensuring the finished result matched their vision for this remarkable home.

Phase 3

03 The Finished Restoration

With every surface properly prepped and primed, we applied Sherwin-Williams premium exterior coatings throughout-  honoring the home's 1930s character. The result is a home that looks like it was built to last another century.

Why It Matters

Preserving History Is Part of What We Do

Lewis & Lewis Painting has been serving Volusia County since 1987. In that time, we've worked on thousands of homes — new construction, mid-century ranches, coastal cottages, and yes, the occasional piece of living history like this one. We understand that a home is more than walls and paint. It's where life happens. And when that home has nearly a century of stories behind it, the work we do carries extra weight.
